Do I need a proctor for the ServSafe Food Handler exam?
This is one of the biggest practical differences between the two main ServSafe programs, and it causes a lot of confusion because people hear "ServSafe exam needs a proctor" without hearing which exam. Here's the split:
- Food Handler (what most food-service workers need): 40 questions, untimed, online, no proctor. Finish the course, take the assessment, get your certificate.
- Manager (for supervisors and management certification): 90 questions, timed, and proctored, taken either in person or online with a live remote proctor watching.
If your employer asked you for a "food handler card" or "food handler certificate," you almost certainly need the first one, no proctor, no test center, no appointment. You can go from starting the course to holding the certificate in a single afternoon.
What you need to take it at home
A reliable internet connection and a browser, that's essentially it. A computer or tablet is smoother than a phone for the course content. Since the assessment is untimed, pick a quiet hour rather than squeezing it between shifts; careless misreads are the main way people lose points on an open-ended clock.
Make the attempt count
Even without a proctor or time limit, you still pay per attempt in most setups, so walk in ready. Run our three free practice tests until you're consistently above 75%, and use the topic quizzes on anything that keeps tripping you up.
